There’s plenty of room for jokes about all this, but I’ve read two books on Bulger and like, a million different articles, so... Yeah, not gonna pretend I’m not excited. You can read the whole exclusive over at GQ, and the lede is here:
There Will Be A Lot Of Whitey Bulger Movies In The Near Future
Just days after Matt Damon confirmed that he’s settled on his first directing project, the actor tells GQ that he and Ben Affleck have also chosen their next collaboration: a movie about the former godfather of the Irish Mob, one of the coldest, most ruthless figures in the history of organized crime.
“We’re doing a Whitey Bulger movie,” Damon says.
But wait, that’s just number one. There are also all these other movies.
#2:
Previously announced Bulger projects include one from producer Graham King ... King has reportedly acquired the rights of the Winter Hill Gang’s chief enforcer, John Martorano.
#3:
Another project, which borrows its title from the Bulger book Black Mass by Boston Globe reporters Dick Lehr and Gerard O’Neill, is reportedly in the works from producer Brian Oliver.
#4.
And actor Peter Facinelli, perhaps best known for the Twilight Saga, is said to be producing an adaptation of Edward MacKenzie and Phyllis Karas’s book Street Soldier: My Life as an Enforcer for Whitey Bulger and the Boston Irish Mob.
See, you might think it’s overkill to make five different movies (including The Departed) about the same overhyped crime family in Boston, but nobody needs your snarky perspective here. Okay? People who think this is stupid are the same ones who pretended not to enjoy The Town.
Personally, I can’t get enough of stuff like this.
THERE CAN NEV-AH, EV-AH BE ENOUGH.
