Smokin Joe Frazier, May He Rest In Peace

Joe Frazier passed away on Monday night, succumbing to liver cancer. He was 67.

↵I never watched him fight live, but between books and movies and grainy YouTube videos, there was never a bad time to go back and relive what was probably the most fascinating rivalry of the century, featuring one of the most underappreciated athletes in history. SB Nation’s Bad Left Hook has an obituary up here, and while you’re at it, here’s Mark Kram’s 1975 Sports Illustrated recap of the Thrilla in Manila. Oh, and these pictures from 1971 are fantastic, as well. But I knida love this ad the most—for Joe’s face toward the end, and as a time capsule to the era he owned.
