D.C. Boys Basketball Championships: Roosevelt Wins DCIAA Championship On Ezell Starks’ Buzzer Beater

Theodore Roosevelt doubled up Eastern 70-35 when the two teams met in December, but the outcome was quite a bit closer Saturday evening when the two teams met in the District of Columbia Interscholastic Athletic Association (DCIAA) championship game.

Roosevelt (25-5) needed its second buzzer beater in as many games to win the DCIAA championship 62-60 at Cooliedge High School. It was Roosevelt's second DCIAA title in four years.

Roosevelt jumped to a 9-0 lead but couldn’t maintain its quick start as Eastern took an 18-13 lead into the beginning of the second quarter and held on for a 27-23 halftime lead

Roosevelt still trailed 43-40 going into the fourth quarter but forced a 60-60 tie in the final seconds. A quick steal by senior guard Ezell Starks with just three seconds left and his ensuing buzzer-beating layup secured the title.

In Thursday's semifinals, senior guard Antone James made a 3-point shot at the buzzer in a 71-69 victory over Spingarn.
