Point guard James Robinson made two free throws with four seconds to give DeMatha a 52-50 victory over Roosevelt on Monday in the Abe Pollin City Title Game before a crowd of about 6,000 at the Verizon Center.
D.C. City Title Game: DeMatha Beats Roosevelt 52-50
Roosevelt, which won its league semifinal and final on last-second shots, committed a turnover on its final, frantic possession this time.
Roosevelt was the underdog in the game and trailed by eight in the fourth quarter but came back to lead briefly, then forged the tie.
The score was 50-50 with over a minute to play when DeMatha decided to play for a final shot. Robinson, a junior with several Division I offers, waited until the final 10 seconds, made a move into the lane and was fouled.
For DeMatha (26-7), the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference champion, it was a sixth city title in seven seasons. Sophomore center BeeJay Anya had 14 points, six rebounds and six blocked shots.
Roosevelt (25-6) was the champion of the D.C. Interscholastic Athletic Association. Roosevelt’s leading scorer was Devin Gallman, who had 19 points.
The WCAC champion has won this city championship over the DCIAA winner 10 of the past 11 seasons.
