New York AA, A Finals: Mount Vernon To Play For Record 9th State Title
Mount Vernon will play for a record ninth New York state title on Sunday in the Class AA finals in Glens Falls.
Mount Vernon’s opponent is Jamestown, which upset No. 1-ranked Christian Brothers Academy of Albany 61-56 in overtime Saturday.
Three-time defending champion Jamesville-DeWitt (21-3) plays Harborfields (21-2) in the Class A final Sunday.
Mount Vernon’s star player is point guard Jabarie Hinds, a two-time Mr. New York Basketball. Hinds was held to 10 points and four rebounds Saturday in the semifinals, when Mount Vernon (20-5) beat Half Hollow Hills West 69-65.
Mount Vernon is tied with Bridgehampton for having the most boys state basketball titles in New York history with eight. Bridgehampton won its titles in Class D, the most recent in 1998.
Mount Vernon has seen six of its alumni play in the NBA, including Ben Gordon of the Pistons. Mount Vernon’s most recent state title was in 2007.
On Saturday, Burke Academy (Class B), Friends Academy (Class C) and New York Mills (Class D) won titles in what officially is called the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA).
The champions of classes AA, A and B will advance to New York’s Federation Tournament on March 25-27 in Albany.
