Diamondbacks create an all-time linguistic first

USA TODAY Sports

Okay, so this didn’t have to work real hard to grab me:

Cool, huh?

Just after I saw that announcement, I got the press release in my in-box. A few details:

PHOENIX - The Arizona Diamondbacks will host Native American Recognition Day, presented by Gila River Casinos, this Saturday at 7:10 p.m. at Chase Field. The game will be broadcast in native Navajo language on KTNN AM 660 from Window Rock, Ariz. with Dan Arnold and George LaFrance calling the action and will be the first Major League Baseball game to be broadcast in Native American language.

The D’backs are also sponsoring an Inter-Tribal Youth Baseball & Softball Tournament, “with more than 1,300 participants that hail from five states and represent 44 tribes.”

The Diamondbacks are perennially ranked as one of the best places to work in Phoenix. They’re also quite skilled in the public-relations department, it seems. I’ll be in transit on Saturday, but otherwise I would tune in for at least a while to KTNN’s Internet feed. Haven’t you always wondered how to say gritty in Navajo?
