Video: IndyCar 2013 season recap

Relive the exciting 2013 IZOD IndyCar Series season before tuning in to the season finale on Saturday night at 8 p.m. ET from Auto Club Speedway.

USA TODAY Sports

After 18 races, the 2013 IndyCar Series championship comes down to two drivers and the 26 points between them and either leader Scott Dixon or Helio Castroneves will be crowned after Saturday’s MAVTV 500 at Auto Club Speedway.

Dixon is on the five-year plan, having won championships in both 2003 and 2008. Five years later makes 2013 and Dixon is just one event away from capturing the crown once again for Target Chip Ganassi Racing.

But Dixon only just recently just became the championship leader, capitalizing on two consecutive DNFs for a gearbox failure from Castroneves at the Grand Prix of Houston doubleheader. Castroneves led Dixon by 49 points prior to the two races and left with a 26 point deficit.

Castroneves’ path to the championship has been on pinpoint consistency up until Houston. And as soon as that went away, Dixon, with his four victories was able to cut into the gap considerably. With only one race remaining, Castroneves is in a position where he must dig deep and win his second race to have a realistic shot at the IndyCar Series championship.

But before the race kicks off on Saturday night, relive the build-up to the season championship with the video above with a highlight reel from every stop on the tour from the Grand Prix at St. Petersburg to the Shell and Pennzoil Grand Prix at Houston.

That video can be found at the top of this post.

The season ending race is set to begin on Saturday with the TV broadcast scheduled for 8:00 p.m. ET on the NBC Sports Network.
