Ed Carpenter won the Fast Nine Shootout on Saturday, and in doing so won the pole for the 2013 Indianapolis 500.

USA TODAY Sports

Indianapolis’ own Ed Carpenter will start on the pole in the 2013 Indianapolis 500 after winning the Fast Nine Shootout on Saturday. Carpenter, the only owner/driver in the 2013 field, knocked off the favored drivers from Andretti Autosport and Team Penske.

Carpenter posted the fifth-fastest time during regular qualifying, but took the pole with an average lap speed of 228.762 mph. He was the only driver in the Fast Nine Shootout to not be affiliated with either Andretti Autosport or Team Penske.

Carlos Munoz will start in second position in his Indianapolis 500 debut, while Marco Andretti secured the final spot on the front line by qualifying third.
