2013 Indy 500 qualifying: Bump Day TV schedule, start time

TV schedule and information on Bump Day, the last day of the Indy 500 qualifying.

Jamie Squire

With the first day of qualifying -- Pole Day -- in the books on Saturday, Indy 500 hopefuls have one more chance to make it into the field on Sunday, before the race a week later on May 26. Sunday is referred to as “Bump Day,” a term used for the fact that slower drivers from Pole Day can be “bumped” from the field.

Spots one through 24 were decided on Saturday. Ed Carpenter took the pole position for his victory in the Fast Nine Shootout. The top nine were set due to that shootout, with spots 10 through 24 set in order of average times over the course of four consecutive laps. The final nine spots will now be decided on Sunday, via the same four-lap average.

If enough drivers put up times faster than any of the top 24 racers, then a driver from Saturday can be bumped out of the field. If a racer gets bumped, he can take another qualifying attempt to get himself back in the field and bump someone else, though all racers are allowed just three qualifying attempts each.

Simona de Silvestro of KV Racing Technology currently holds the No. 24 spot and stands the biggest chance of being bumped, accordingly.

The gates open early in the morning, but Sunday’s qualifying won’t begin until noon (ET). NBC Sports Network will carry the television coverage of the qualifying from the very beginning through 6:30 p.m.
