As it has throughout the month of May, Chevrolet continues to be the dominant manufacturer holding the top six positions and nine of the top 10.
Defending 500 champion Dario Franchitti, who is looking for a record-tying fourth victory, has struggled through the onset. The Scotsman currently runs 14th.
There have been three cautions for separate incidents involving JR Hilderbrand, Sebastian Saavedra and IndyCar points leader Takuma Sato. Hildebrand and Saavedra are out of the race with damage, while Sato has continued on after spinning off of Turn 2.
