Marco Andretti fastest in Milwaukee practice at the Milwaukee Mile

Marco Andretti was fastest in Friday practice at the Milwaukee Mile, setting the stage for yet another Andretti moment at one-mile speedway where the family and team has dominated for over 30 years.

It’s becoming a running gimmick at this point but Marco Andretti was once again fastest in practice for an oval race this season, something he accomplished routinely at Indianapolis and again at Texas and Milwaukee on Friday afternoon.

But he has yet to reach victory lane this season and with Father’s Day approaching on Sunday, Marco Andretti could pay his Dad and team owner, Michael Andretti a pretty special gift should he win.

Michael agreed.

“I couldn’t ask for a better present,” the elder Andretti agreed. “It would be great for him for his championship (chase) to get those points, but also it would be another special family moment at Milwaukee if that were to happen.”

The Milwaukee Mile and Andretti success are synonymous with each other. Michael earned five Indy car victories as a driver at the one-mile speedway in West Allis, Wisc. and four more as a tram owner. It’s also the only track that featured an all-Andretti podium, in 1991 with Michael winning over cousin John and father Mario.

That catapulted Michael to the 1991 CART Championship and it all began at Milwaukee.

“So many special things have happened (at The Milwaukee Mile) with me,” Michael said.

Marco led both practice sessions on Friday and posted a best lap of 21.921 seconds at 166 mph in the morning session and a 178.534 mph lap in the afternoon. His teammate, and defending race winner, Ryan Hunter-Reay was second in both sessions.

It’s still early but the weekend is setting up to become yet another Andretti moment.

Milwaukee IndyFest will take place on Saturday at 4:30 ET and will air on the NBC Sports Network.
