Ryan Hunter-Reay has officially arrived as a championship contender this season after winning the Milwaukee IndyFest on Saturday afternoon at the Milwaukee Mile.
IndyCar Championship Standings: Ryan Hunter-Reay closes gap following Milwaukee victory
Ryan Hunter-Reay won Saturday’s IndyFest and closed his championship gap to 16 points behind Helio Castroneves.

Helio Castroneves entered the race with a 21-point lead over Marco Andretti but the Hunter-Reay victory, combined with the Andretti DNF has given the rundown a new look entering this weekend’s races at Iowa Speedway.
Hunter-Reay has now moved into second place and is just 16 points behind Castroneves. He also leads in the wins category, two-races-to-one over Castroneves while Andretti remains winless and 50 points behind Castroneves.
Despite a top-five in Milwaukee, two-win James Hinchcliffe remains ninth in the overall standings.
Takuma Sato led the most laps but ultimately finished seventh after an ill-timed caution temporarily trapped him a lap down. He’s up to fourth in the standings, for AJ Foyt Racing, as a result.
Scott Dixon, Tony Kanaan, Simon Pagenaud, Justin Wilson, Hinchcliffe and Dario Franchitti complete the top-10. The full championship standings can be found below.
