IndyCar aborts planned standing start in Toronto due to stalled car

The IndyCar Series was set to debut the first standing start in league history but a stalled car put those plans on hold.

USA TODAY Sports

IndyCar was set to debut a standing start for the first time in Series history on Saturday afternoon in the Honda Indy Toronto but the format was called off just moments before the lights went out due to the stalled car of Josef Newgarden.

Under IndyCar’s standing start rules, the race began under the yellow flag and the restart would revert to a standard rolling start.

The development was especially disappointing because IndyCar generated a lot of publicity for the standing start and likely drew a lot of new fans to the NBC Sports Network on Saturday, against the NASCAR Nationwide Series race, just out of curiosity for what a standing start would look like for the IndyCar Series.

As a result of the stalled car, a standing start will not be implemented again until the next and final doubleheader weekend, at Houston in October.

IndyCar Series officials could do themselves a huge favor if they made a game time decision following the Saturday race and announce a standing start for Sunday’s race instead. Fans were left disappointed in the results but the league has a real chance to make this right with one more race left to run on Sunday afternoon.
