Rubens Barrichello enters Indianapolis Grand-Am event with Doran Racing

Rubens Barrichello is returning to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway but not in an open-wheel race car.

According to a report on RACER.com, Barrichello will compete in next week’s Grand-Am Rolex Series Brickyard Grand Prix for Doran Racing Dallara Ford Daytona Prototype. He will compete for the team alongside co-pilot Doug Peterson.

“It came together here at the last minute and we’re really excited about it,” team owner Kevin Doran told RACER. “Doug’s going to be here in the morning to fit the race seat, and because he’s bigger than Rubens, Rubens will make his seat to fit inside Doug’s.”

Since leaving the IndyCar Series at the end of last season, Barrichello has continued racing but in the Brazilian Stock Car Series. The 19-year Formula 1 veteran had wanted to remain in IndyCar but was unable to secure adequate sponsorship dollars.

The deal with Doran will also reunite Barrichello against his countryman, friend and ‘brother,’ Indy 500 race winner Tony Kanaan, who is also entered into the race, in a Prototype for Chip Ganassi Racing powered by Felix Sebates.

Barrichello previously made eight Formula 1 starts at Indianapolis while driving for Ferrarri and won the Indianapolis Grand Prix for the team in 2002. He made his Indy 500 debut 10 years later and was the event’s Rookie of the Year after finishing 11th for KV Racing Technology.

The partnership with Doran Racing will give the popular Barrichello one more shot at glory at The Brickyard and add yet another IndyCar connection to Friday’s Grand-Am event. The race will also feature AJ Allmendinger and Sebastien Bourdais.
