ALMS champion Lucas Luhr tests Indy car for first time at Sonoma

Multi-time sports car champion Lucas Luhr says he learned a lot in his first foray in an Indy car Tuesday, testing in advance of his IndyCar Series debut on Aug. 24 at Sonoma Raceway.

The test also occurred at Sonoma but was limited to just 10 laps before a mechanical issue sidelined the only driver to win championships in three different classes in the American LeMans Series.

The German was unofficially timed with a best lap of 1:23.6 according to Autosport, whom attended the test session. Luhr tested for Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing and occurred in the same car that primary driver Josef Newgarden set through its paces earlier in the afternoon.

Luhr planes to race in a second SFHR entry in two weeks at the California road course.

“My very first out lap -- it was a shock,” the Team Muscle Milk driver told Autosport . “After a few laps, I kind of got a feeling for what it’s about and how you have to drive it different a little bit than the LMP1 car.

“It’s just me getting used to the car, understanding the technique, what kind of changes I have to do to fit my driving style. And then it should not be so bad.”

Luhr is considering a full-time switch to IndyCar next season and could bring his ALMS team owner Greg Pickett and engineer Brandon Fry with him.

Fry has considerable Indy car experience in the Champ Car World Series and the tandem could make a home for themselves in IndyCar next season if they choose to not take part in the inaugural Unified SportsCar organization next season.
