Roger Penske confronts Marco Andretti and calls Dixon penalty a ‘judgment call’

Roger Penske believes Marco Andretti habitually jumped the restart on Sunday at Sonoma and confronted the driver as a result.

Roger Penske was caught confronting Marco Andretti following the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma on Sunday afternoon and even waved his finger at the 26-year-old Andretti Autosport driver.

Penske told Racer.com’s Robin Miller that he was displeased with the driver’s restarts but that he’s over it and hopes Andretti is too.

”I told him, “Marco, you were jumping the restart every time and you have the right foot too, you know,’” Penske told Miller.

“He said Helio (Castroneves) pushed him off but all I know is that, from where I was standing, he was beside everyone before it went green every time.”

Penske driver Will Power won the race and his championship contender Castroneves finished in seventh and retained his title lead.

Andretti finished the race in fourth.

Penske defends IndyCar decision to penalize Scott Dixon

Penske said the decision to penalize Scott Dixon for making contact with a Will Power crewmember on pit road was a judgment call and that it really didn’t affect the championship battle between Dixon and Castroneves.

“I think the difference -- we were 33, now we’re 39 -- so it’s 6 points. Not anything catastrophic,” Penske said. “That’s racing. To me, I didn’t call it. I wasn’t involved in it. Obviously when you have a pit crew member going up in the air... If you look at it, our pit crew actually lifted the tire up, went behind the car.

“To me, I think judgment there was made by whoever makes that call. We certainly didn’t. You know, those are the way things go.”

Dixon was on the way to potentially winning the race and likely would have cut Castroneves’ lead in half if he were able to win or score a podium.
