Tony Kanaan confirms NASCAR visit with Joe Gibbs Racing

Indianapolis 500 winner Tony Kanaan does not yet have an IndyCar contract for next season and confirmed a report that he visited Joe Gibbs Racing last week about a potential opportunity to compete in NASCAR.

Tony Kanaan confirmed to the Associated Press on Tuesday that he visited with Joe Gibbs Racing last week about a potential deal that could see him compete in NASCAR next season.

Kanaan is the defending winner of the Indianapolis 500 but is still looking for a ride next season as his IndyCar contract with KV Racing ends at the conclusion of the season.

“I can tell you that I’m a free agent so I’m looking everywhere,” he said on Tuesday during a test at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. “The report, some people doubt it, but I’m going to say it’s true.”

Kanaan says that he would prefer to remain in IndyCar but that he’s looking into other forms of motorsports ever since winning the Indy 500 in May.

He’s also inquired with teams about potential opportunities in Brazil and in sports car racing, after making his debut in the Grand-Am Rolex Series at the Brickyard Grand Prix in July.

The 2004 IndyCar Series champion is ultimately looking to avoid a similar situation to the one he faced three years ago when he lost funding in December and had to put together a last minute deal with KV Racing. Kanaan has the one victory and nine podiums with KV Racing since joining the team in 2011.

He has 17 career victories in Indy car racing since 1998.
