One of the more popular events in the recent history of the IndyCar Series has been canceled for the foreseeable future as the Baltimore Grand Prix has been canceled through at least 2016 after organizers couldn’t secure a new date for the race.

IndyCar will not return to Baltimore for the city’s Grand Prix through at least 2015. A title sponsor will be needed for any possible return by 2016.

The three-day event was contested during Labor Day weekend in each of the past three seasons but a football game between Ohio State and Navy will occupy the slot in 2014. In 2015, the American Legion will convene in the city, providing yet another conflict.
“After a successful visit to Baltimore, which included record attendance, we are disappointed that our schedules will not align to host an event in 2014,” said Mark Miles, CEO of IndyCar parent organization Hulman & Co. “This was simply a matter of trying to find the best date that worked for all parties, since Labor Day weekend was not an option in 2014.”
Kevin Harris, a spokesperson for the Baltimore mayoral office says the lack of a title sponsor is what made finding a new date unobtainable.
“Right now, without a sponsor, it really would be hard to confirm a date for 2015,” Harris said.
The same rules apply for a potential return in 2016. Miles added that IndyCar is continuing to work on a schedule for next season and anticipates announcing it prior to the end of the current season.
Will Power, Ryan Hunter-Reay and Simon Pagenaud won the three IndyCar Baltimore Grand Prix events, respectively.
