Real Madrid will look to avoid an embarrassing upset against Cruz Azul.
Both teams earned their place in the tournament after winning their regional club championship -- Real Madrid won the UEFA Champions League, Cruz Azul won’t the CONCACAF Champions League -- and thus getting a chance to be named the greatest football club in the world.
Cruz Azul were forced to play an extra match, earning a late comeback win over the Western Sydney Wanderers on Saturday, in a match played on a completely waterlogged pitch. Because of the heavy rain, Tuesday’s match was moved from Rabat to Marrakech to hopefully allow for the pitch condition to not affect the match.
Madrid are fresh off yet another league victory on Friday and will now try to add a trophy to their collection before entering Spain’s winter break. They’re the clear favorites here in this match, but that doesn’t mean the Mexican side will be a pushover for them. The trouble for Cruz Azul though is they’re simply not going to be able to go toe-to-toe with Madrid, so they’re going to need to play a great match and hope Madrid’s attention is elsewhere.
Cruz Azul’s key player is the ageless Gerardo Torrado, who features the ability to hit teammates with precise long passes could give Madrid some problems on the counter attack. La Máquina are solid defensively, but they will be thoroughly tested by Madrid’s ridiculously dangerous attack. Goalkeeper José Corona will need to have a big day if Cruz Azul hopes to pull off an upset.
