La Liga has been suspended for at least the next two matchdays due to the coronavirus pandemic. Matches will not be played until April 4 at the earliest. The announcement follows the Spanish government’s decision to shut down all schools in Madrid and two towns in the Basque Country due to the outbreak.

Real Madrid’s entire first team is currently in quarantine due to a member of the club’s basketball team, Trey Thompkins, testing positive for Covid-19. The club will not hold training sessions, and has asked players to keep up their fitness in their homes.

La Liga had initially planned to play games in empty stadiums, which the Spanish press criticized in favor of postponement. The league made the decision to suspend operations two days later.

Valencia played a Champions League match behind closed doors on Tuesday, while Atlético Madrid traveled to England to play Liverpool in front of a full crowd Wednesday. Traveling Atléti supporters attended that match. Sevilla and Getafe were scheduled to compete in UEFA Europa League on Thursday against AS Roma and Inter Milan, respectively, but those matches were canceled due to regulations put in place by the Italian government.

La Liga has not yet announced what it plans to do if it cannot restart play next month.
