Rafael Nadal was selected to bear the Spanish flag during the opening ceremony at the 2012 London Olympics on July 27. Russia’s Maria Sharapova and Serbia’s Novak Djokovic will also carry their country’s flag.

“For me the chance to carry the flag representing all the Spanish athletes in London is a true honor,” Nadal said. “I think carrying the flag will be one of the most moving moments of my entire career.
“I can only say thanks and wish my fellow athletes the best of luck.”
Nadal is coming off his record seventh French Open title. The 11-time Grand Slam champion will be making his third Olympic appearance. He will defend his gold medal in singles during the 2008 Beijing games, and will compete in doubles alongside Marcel Granollers.
Nadal isn’t the only tennis superstar representing his country. Maria Sharapova will carry Russia’s flag and Novak Djokovic will bear Serbia’s during the July 27 opening ceremony.
