Rafael Nadal will carry Spain’s flag for the Spanish Olympic team during the opening ceremony at the 2012 London Olympics. The tennis legend was selected by the Spanish Olympic Committee on Wednesday. Nadal released a statement following the decision:

“For me the chance to carry the flag representing all the Spanish athletes in London is a true honor,” Nadal said. “I think carrying the flag will be one of the most moving moments of my entire career.

“I can only say thanks and wish my fellow athletes the best of luck.”

Nadal is coming off his record seventh French Open title. The 11-time Grand Slam champion will be making his third Olympic appearance. He will defend his gold medal in singles during the 2008 Beijing games, and will compete in doubles alongside Marcel Granollers.

Nadal isn’t the only tennis superstar representing his country. Maria Sharapova will carry Russia’s flag and Novak Djokovic will bear Serbia’s during the July 27 opening ceremony.
