‘Woo Hoo’: Playlist Leaked For 2012 London Opening Ceremony

The Opening Ceremony of the 2012 Olympics in London will take place on July 27. Danny Boyle, the director of the ceremony, has assembled an extensive playlist of iconic Londoner, English and British songs, that range from classical compositions to modern pop hits to Frankie Goes to Hollywood. The supposed setlist has been leaked and it features some interesting choices and omissions.

UK tabloid The Sun originally posted the supposedly-leaked setlist, which was later picked up by The Telegraph and later by Chris Chase of Yahoo! Sports. Almost all of the expected artists are included: the Beatles, David Bowie, the Rolling Stones, the Who, Led Zeppelin, the Kinks, the Clash. There’s also a sizable contingent of modern English superstars, like Radiohead, Arctic Monkeys, Muse, Blur and of course everyone’s mom’s favorite rock band, Coldplay.

But there is at least one glaring snub: no Elton John. I can only assume -- and really, I would be shocked if this didn’t happen -- that Sir Elton will be performing live at some point during the Olympics.

Having the director of Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire and 28 Days Later head up your Opening Ceremony is awesome and shows that England at least attempts to be hip when it comes to stuff like this. Let’s all hope that when the United States hosts another one of these shindigs, they’ll turn the reins over to Quentin Tarantino or somebody similarly cool and with a good sense of not only U.S. music history, but what a big cross-section of the country is into. I’m just kidding, that would never happen. It’ll end up being Zach Braff.

The biggest takeaway from all of this is that -- thankfully, mercifully -- this figures to be the one sporting event of 2012 where you won’t be subjected to “Seven Nation Army.” For that, England, we applaud you.

You can find the full setlist at Yahoo! Sports.
