When selecting an anthem for a big event on a world stage, the safe route is to go with something percussive and uplifting. It should incorporate children sing-chanting if at all possible. K’naan’s “Wavin’ Flag” at the 2010 World Cup in Africa, was a home run in this respect. It was the perfect soundtrack to put over B-roll of smiling people of all nations, creeds and colors standing as one.
Muse Premieres ‘Survival’ As Official Song Of The 2012 Olympics
The 2012 London Olympics will apparently eschew these common conventions of anthemery in order to melt our faces off. Muse’s song “Survival” has been tabbed as the official song of this year’s summer games, and it doesn’t disappoint.
It’s hard to see the song being played over anything but footage of athletes crushing weathered foes in the pool, on the track, or wherever else. At least it rocks, though.
