The London Olympics got off to a rocky start Wednesday when the women’s soccer match between North Korea and Columbia was delayed more than an hour after the North Korean team refused to take the field because the South Korean flag was displayed during their introductions.
Olympic Organizers Apologize For North Korean Flag Mishap
Olympic organizers issued an apology for displaying the South Korean flag during North Korea’s women’s soccer match.
London Olympic organizers, who were responsible for the mistake, apologized Wednesday and issued the following statement, according to the Associated Press.
“Today ahead of the women’s football match at Hampden Park, the South Korean flag was shown on a big screen video package instead of the North Korean flag. Clearly that is a mistake,” organizers said. “We will apologize to the team and the National Olympic Committee and steps will be taken to ensure this does not happen again.”
There was only one problem with that statement. It didn’t refer to North Korea by their official Olympic name so organizers had to reissue the statement with the correct “Republic of Korea and “Democratic People’s Republic of Korea” names.
The good news for the organizers is they have plenty of events left to work out all the kinks.
