2012 Summer Olympics What To Watch: Opening Ceremony
Overwhelmed by the Summer Olympics? Worried you’ll miss the best events? Confused where to find it? Don’t be! Our daily What To Watch series will highlight the must-see sports of the London Games.
Every day throughout the Summer Games, we will provide a quick guide for your Olympic viewing. We won’t list every event that day, but instead will highlight the select few events you should make it a point to watch. And we’ll give the information on where, how and when to watch the competitions, too. The suggestions will range from the marquee events, like the Men’s 100 Meters and the Women’s Gymnastics Finals, but also some of the more exciting competitions that fly under the radar, like Triathlon and Water Polo.
Friday’s Opening Ceremony begins at 4 p.m. ET (9 p.m. London time), but will not be streamed any where online (we covered the silliness of that here). For us U.S. viewers, we won’t see the ceremonies until NBC airs them in primetime, beginning at 7:30 p.m. ET. If you’re on the West Coast, then you have to wait another few hours -- you’ll be getting a tape delay of a tape delay.
Much of the planning has already been released: Fencer Mariel Zagunis will carry the flag for Team USA, Kevin Durant and Carmelo Anthony will look like this, “Hey Jude” will close the spectacle ... and there will be sheep. Lots of sheep:
The whole of the field of play in the Stadium will be transformed into the rolling British countryside as the London 2012 Ceremonies Team creates one of the largest sets ever built. The set will be complete with meadows, fields and rivers, and featuring families taking picnics, sport being played on the village green and farmers tilling the soil whilst real farmyard animals graze - including 12 horses, 3 cows, 2 goats, 10 chickens, 10 ducks, 9 geese, 70 sheep, and 3 sheep dogs.
And yes, we’ll be live-blogging it all. Get ready for GIFs of sheep!
