The Opening Ceremony is probably still winding down on TV somewhere in Hawaii, but it’s Day 1 at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, which means it’s time for the first real installment of our What To Watch series.

What To Watch on Day One at the 2012 Summer Olympics, including U.S. Women’s Soccer, U.S. Women’s Basketball and a duel in the pool between Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte.
There are many events every day at the Summer Games. On Saturday alone, there are 11 medals decided. These daily posts will be your guide on which events are worth your time, why you should watch and, perhaps more importantly, where and when you can see that day’s best Olympic action.
Saturday’s action is highlighted by both the U.S. Women’s Soccer and Basketball teams in action, and the first showdown between Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps. As a reminder, if you’re not a fan of tape delay, every event is streamed line online at the NBC Olympics site.
What To Watch at the Olympics, Saturday, July 28:
Women’s Basketball - USA vs. Croatia (preliminary round), 11:45 a.m. ET, NBC
The United States Women’s basketball team -- a bigger favorite than their male counterparts -- begins its quest for a fifth straight gold medal at the Summer Olympics.
Women’s Soccer - United States vs. Colombia, first round,12 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network
The USWNT continues group play against Colombia. After falling behind to France 2-0 on Wednesday (before rallying to win, 4-2), expect the Americans to try and come out with a stronger start.
Beach Volleyball - Misty May-Treanor / Kerri Walsh-Jennings, 6 p.m. ET, NBC
The duo of May-Treanor and Walsh-Jennings open their play in London, where they’ll be looking for a third-straight gold medal in Women’s Beach Volleyball.
Swimming - Men’s 400-meter IM finals, 8 p.m. ET, NBC (NOTE: Event is tape-delayed, will be live at 2:30 p.m. ET online)
The marquee event of Day 1 in London is saved for last (but only because NBC is tape-delaying it, of course). Barring a colossal shock, the Men’s 400 IM, considered to be the most grueling event in swimming, will be the first of two finals meetings between Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte. Phelps is the two-time defending Olympic gold medalist in the event, but Lochte beat him at the trials in late June by 0.83 seconds. It should be another epic battle and is as must-see as events come at the Olympics.
