Serena Williams, who dominated the field at the All England Club in London earlier this month at the 2012 Wimbledon Championship, picked up where she left off in trouncing Serbian opponent Jelena Jankovic, 6-3, 6-1, in her first-round match in the women’s Olympic tennis tournament.

The Olympic field has 64 players, meaning that Williams need five more wins for gold. She is seeded No. 4 entering the tournament. She’s the proud owner of two Olympic gold medals, but both (won in 2000 and 2008) came in doubles competition with sister Venus Williams. She has never medaled in singles competition, and hopes to change that on courts she knows incredibly well as a five-time Wimbledon champion.

First Lady Michelle Obama and U.S. gymnastics legend Dominique Dawes were among the packed house watching Williams on Saturday.

Williams will next play on Monday against an opponent to be determined. Other major players in action on Day 1 include Roger Federer. American John Isner won his first-round match earlier in the day.
