Andy Roddick Advances To Second Round At Olympics

Andy Roddick scored a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Serbia’s Martin Klizan to move on to the second round of competition in the men’s singles tennis tournament.

Roddick’s first-round match was supposed to happen earlier, but -- surprise! -- it rained at Wimbledon, delaying Roddick’s first action of the tournament until Day 3. Klizan committed 21 unforced errors to Roddick’s five and never forced a break point; so, although Roddick was only able to convert on two out of 13 break points, he still coasted to a two-set victory. His hopes of winning in the doubles tourney are already over after his twosome with John Isner went down in the first round, but he should make some noise in the singles bracket.

Elsewhere in the bracket, Lleyton Hewitt advanced 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 over Ukraine’s Sergiy Stakhovsky, and Marin Cilic beat Austria’s Jurgen Melzer. Second-round play should open later Monday, with Roger Federer facing Julien Benneteau -- who took two sets from Federer just a few weeks ago at Wimbledon -- and Isner facing the Morroccan Malek Jaziri.

Meanwhile, on the women’s side, No. 1 Victoria Azarenka just dropped a set to the relative unknown Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu headed into the third. A potential upset in the making? Eh, probably not.
