Ryan Lochte Edges Michael Phelps In 200m IM Semifinals

Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps have already put on a nice little show in London’s pools during the 2012 Olympics and, surprising to absolutely nobody, their rivalry continued Wednesday afternoon during the 200 meter individual medley’s semifinals.

Phelps and Lochte matched up together in the first heat at the Olypics’ Aquatics Centre on Wednesday, but it was once again Lochte getting the best of his American counterpart, as he finished nearly a full second ahead of Phelps and over two seconds ahead of their closer competition, British swimmer James Goddard.

The results of Wednesday’s semifinals race won’t hinder the championship of the 200-meter individual medley, however, because both Phelps and Lochte advanced to Thursday’s medal round. Lochte’s time of 1:56.13 earned him the top seed for that race, Hungary’s Laszlo Cseh qualified second with a time of 1:56.74 while Phelps will be the third seed thanks to his 1:57.11 finish.

The finals are scheduled to take place at 8:19 local time on Thursday as both Lochte and Phelps look to add yet another medal to the American’s total this summer.
