Women’s 4x200m Freestyle Relay Final: Allison Schmitt Anchors Gold Medal For United States

Allison Schmitt anchored the United States to a come-from-behind victory in the women’s 4x200-meter freestyle relay final, setting an Olympic record in the process.

The United States was second to Australia going into the last leg of the women’s 4x200-meter freestyle relay final Wednesday at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, but Allison Schmitt turned in yet another dominant swim to help the team set an Olympic record at 7:42.92 and win the gold medal.

The final time was just 0.84 seconds off the world record. Australia finished 1.49 seconds behind the Americans in what was an impressive performance in its own right. The Australians led by over a half second before Schmitt entered the water. The 22-year-old swam the last leg in 1:54:09, just a half second over her gold medal winning time in the individual 200-meter freestyle final.

France continued its improved performance in swimming at the games, taking bronze. They led after the first leg swam by Camille Muffat.

The gold medal was the second for Schmitt, Dana Vollmer and Missy Franklin at the London games. Shannon Vreeland earned her first ever at 20 years old.
