There’s a good chance when talking about Team USA and women’s basketball, the story is going to center around someone from the Connecticut Huskies. Especially considering that the team’s coach and six of the 12 players hail from UConn. A different Big East player stole the show on Wednesday, however, as Angel McCoughtry led the women to another pool play victory with a win over Turkey.
Team USA Vs. Turkey, Women’s Olympic Basketball: Angel McCoughtry Leads USA To Victory
Angel McCoughtry and Team USA trounced Turkey on Wednesday in women’s basketball, as pool play continued at the 2012 London Olympics.

McCoughtry, the 2007 Big East Player of the Year, scored 18 points and added seven rebounds -- an astounding six of them coming on the offensive end -- as the USA coasted to an 89-58 victory over Turkey. McCoughtry doesn’t play the prettiest brand of basketball, but she was simply too much for Turkey to handle as she drew eight fouls and went to the charity stripe 11 times due to her hard-nosed style of play.
Team USA ended up with two other players in double-figures too, as Tina Charles and Lindsay Whalen scored 16 and 14 points respectively while grabbing seven rebounds apiece.
Turkey trailed just 19-16 at the end of the first quarter, but their inability to hit shots coupled with the Americans getting hot in the second half doomed them from ever creeping any closer.
America’s next matchup will be against the Czech Republic on Friday night, as pool play continues. This game follows Turkey playing Russia earlier in the afternoon.
