The men’s 200m backstroke gold medal final took place on Thursday at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. In the end, the United States swim team took top honors once again, finishing in first and third place as Tyler Clary took the gold. He beat out top swimmer Ryan Lochte, who had to settle for the bronze.

Clary finished in 1:53.41, not only grabbing the gold, but setting a new Olympic record in the process, knocking off the old mark of 1:53.94. Ryosuke Irie took home the silver for Japan, finishing in 1:53.78, while Lochte’s 1:53.94 was good enough for third.
The announcers for the event livestream noted that Michael Phelps was definitely paying close attention to the results of this race and taking note that Lochte missed out on gold just one half-hour before Lochte and Phelps will be going head-to-head in the men’s 200m individual medley.
