In the last gold medal swimming final on Thursday, the United States failed to capture a medal. The women’s 100m freestyle was the only one of the day’s gold medal events that the U.S. did not wind up on the podium. Missy Franklin posted the best time by an American in the final, but her time of 53.64 seconds was only good enough for fifth place.

Netherlands swimmer Ranomi Kromowidjojo took the gold medal by finishing in an Olympic record 53.00 seconds. Aliaksandra Herasimenia took the silver by finishing in 53.38, while Yi Tang of China claimed the bronze with a time of 53.44.

This is the second gold medal for Kromowidjojo, who previously claimed a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the women’s 4x100m freestyle.

U.S. swimmer Jessica Hardy finished last, 1.02 seconds out of the top spot with a final time of 54.02 seconds.
