2012 Olympics, Women’s 200 Breaststroke Results: Rebecca Soni Sets WR, Wins Gold

U.S. swimmer Rebecca Soni is having a great Olympics and has probably solidified herself as the most underappreacated American participating in these 2012 summer games.

After setting a new world record in the women’s 200m breaststroke Wednesday during the qualifying heat, Soni followed up that performance by breaking her own record Thursday in the finals, winning gold in the event in 2:19.59 over Japan’s Satori Suzuki.

After capturing gold for the second time in as many Olympics, Soni, 25, was candid on how important the 200m breatstroke event is to her.

“This past year, I really said the 200 is my baby, that’s what I want to focus on,” she told the media after winning gold. “I guess it’s been four years in the works, training really hard every day.”

In 2008 in Beijing, Soni also won her gold medal in record time. Clearly, it’s her event now, continuing the U.S. dominance in the event, as Amanda Beard won it in 2004 in Athens.

Now with one gold and one silver, which was won in the 100m breaststroke, Soni is expected to represent the United States in the women’s medley relay on Saturday, swimming (what else?) the breastroke.
