Michael Phelps Is Better Than Almost Every Country

Bill Hanstock

Michael Phelps is pretty good at swimming. Have you seen this? Have you heard about this? As it turns out, Michael Phelps is better at swimming than just about anyone else is at anything. That’s why they call him “the Joey Chestnut of swimming.” (Note: They don’t actually call him that.) But as it turns out, he’s even better than we thought.

Mister Chip did some crunching of the numbers after Phelps’ latest gold medal swim on Thursday and ... well, I hope you’re sitting down.

Yes, if Michael Phelps were a country -- and not just a fella with a Subway endorsement deal and incredibly wide lats -- he would be in pretty good shape on the all-time Olympics leaderboard.

Instead, he’ll just have to settle for having won more gold medals than all but 34 entire nations. Wow.
