Megan Rapinoe Scores Twice As Team USA Beats Canada In Extra Time

Out lesbian torches the Canadians with a corner kick, teammate Alex Morgan finishes the job in the 122nd minute.

Out lesbian Megan Rapinoe scored her second and third goals of these Olympics, leading the U.S. women’s soccer team to a 4-3 victory over Canada in extra time.

Down 1-0, Rapinoe tied the game in the second half with the Americans’ first goal on a fantastic corner kick. She followed it up just 16 minutes later to again tie the match, this time at 2-2. Alex Morgan scored the game-winner in the 122nd minute.

Rapinoe casually came out of the closet in early May. In early July, our friends at Out magazine released an interview in which she had some fantastic things to say about being out in sports:

“I feel like sports in general are still homophobic, in the sense that not a lot of people are out,” she says. “I feel everyone is really craving [for] people to come out. People want - they need - to see that there are people like me playing soccer for the good ol’ U.S. of A.”

They certainly see her today! Her contributions to this big win go another step in exposing young, struggling teenagers to another athlete like them.

We should also note that the team’s head coach, Pia Sundhage, is also openly gay. The team is now guaranteed at least a silver medal; They play Japan for the gold on Thursday.

The SB Nation guys have fallen in love with “the hand” Rapinoe showed Canadian Melissa Tancredi during the match.

Rapinoe is one of 23 out athletes at these Olympic Games, many of whom are doing very well.
