4’9 Jayson Carter carries the ball for Rice against UTEP

There was an emotional moment in Rice-UTEP, as college football’s smallest player got his first carry.

Jayson Carter is smaller than your average football player. He’s even smaller than your average football player who gets a human interest story written about how small he is. Carter is 4’9, 135 pounds, but that didn’t stop him from playing football at his small independent high school -- he had over 1,000 yards rushing at KIPP Houston and more amazingly, played defense and racked up a bunch of tackles -- and that didn’t stop him from walking on to Rice.

He spent three years as a walk-on for the Owls playing on their scout team, diligently working for an opportunity to play.

Today, in a 42-7 win over UTEP, he got that opportunity:

Carter only got one carry for one yard -- but as you can hear from the crowd’s cheering, it meant a lot.
