Google Trends tells us what World Cup fans care about
Google put together some fun facts from 100M+ searches related to the World Cup. Here are seven things we learned.


(1) Going on summer vacation!

Spain is searching more for Curitiba, its team’s World Cup base, than for top summer destination Ibiza.
(2) Other major sporting events they are hosting!

Even during the French Open, national searches for “Les Bleus” were 2x higher than those for the top 3 French tennis players combined.
(3) The monarchy!

Steven Gerrard is very much top of mind for fans, with queries for the star even rising above those for Queen Elizabeth II on two occasions.
(4) Their own happiness!

Costa Rica searches more for football than for “pura vida”, its favorite expression of joy.World Cup fans care more about these things than soccer ...
(1) Kangaroos!

Despite World Cup fever, Australia has been searching more for kangaroos than for its national team, the Socceroos.(2) And mascots!

Brazil is searching 2x more for World Cup mascot Fuleco - a three-banded armadillo - than for national hero Neymar.
(3) ... and, uh, other stuff.
The Netherlands has shown more search interest in Wesley Sneijder’s wife, Yolanthe Cabau, than in their first opponent Spain.
