Today, with the Yankees leading by many a run, backup catcher Francisco Cervelli took a shot to the nuts:
Francisco Cervelli gets a foul tip to the nuts
PSA: Nutshots hurt.

(No, Yankees announcers, it was not his collarbone.)
The person who put that Instagram up, Jimmy Traina of Fox, implied that Cervelli was not wearing a cup, which is why he writhed on the ground in pain for a few minutes.
Although we couldn’t find any confirmation anywhere, we’re going to guess Cervelli, a professional catcher who has been hit in the nuts before, was probably wearing a cup. Getting hit in the testicles with a foul tip really hurts, even if you are wearing a thin sheet of plastic over it.
We’re going to guess this because he continued playing, instead of being taken to the hospital. When Adrian Beltre, one of the few in the MLB silly enough not to wear a cup, got hit in the area in question fielding a grounder, he suffered a “bruised testicle” -- he said it grew to the size of a grapefruit -- and took a stint on the 15-day DL.
Our point is: laugh away at athletes when you see them get in hit in the groin. It definitely hurts, and there’s not much they can do about it.
