Francesco Molinari cranks up the rowdies with an ace at the par-3 16th hole at TPC Scottsdale.
Watch Phoenix Open crowd shower 16th hole with beer after Francesco Molinari ace

Molinari, with a pitching wedge from 135 yards, gave the lubed-up frat boys, whose job it is to imbibe adult beverages as they hang over the grandstands and heckle the players at the notorious 16th, just what they came to see. And the 32-year-old from Italy got what he asked for when the crowd celebrated by showering him with beer and other items (hey -- the tour’s anti-flying objects mandate said nothing about what spectators might toss at players). Here’s are some views from the crowd as it happened:
The roar did not go unnoticed by those who have the (mis)fortune of living near the stadium (h/t PGA.com).
I can hear the crowd from the #WMPhoenixOpen at my apartment! Holyyyy
— Melissa Mabanta (@Melissa_Mabanta) January 31, 2015 Molinari’s was the ninth hole-in-one at the 16th since Scottsdale began hosting the PGA Tour’s most raucous event in 1987. The last player to post an ace at 16 -- where Tiger Woods famously raised the roof after his eagle-1 in 1997 -- was Jarrod Lyle in 2011, according to the PGA Tour.
