A 15-year-old cricket player in India achieved what’s tantamount to the impossible. Pranav Dhanawade of Mumbai now holds the record for the highest individual score by a cricket player in any form of cricket ever with an astounding 1,009 runs, not out.

Dhanawade was playing in an inter-school cup when the miraculous innings occurred. It took a total of 323 balls for him to hit the mark, which included an astounding 59 sixes and 127 fours. It’s almost impossible to put this kind of achievement in context for sports fans who don’t understand cricket, so let’s try.

Sachin Tendulkar is arguably the greatest cricket player of this generation. His highest score ever was 248. His average was 53. This is an astoundingly good score and average, so think of this like a running back in football. Running for 53 in a game is solid, running for over 100 is a great day and 248 -- well that’s something else.

This 15-year-old from Mumbai just did the equivalent of running for over 1,000 yards in a single game.

The record had stood unbroken for 116 YEARS, and even then the prior record was 628 -- set in the UK in 1899. He didn’t only beat the biggest record in the history of cricket, he smashed it. While some will try and write this off as being a kid playing other kids -- keep in mind that every single great cricketer had their school scored tracked like Dhanawade’s. Legends of the game had their chances against kids too, and none of them came close to batting 1,009.

It’s unthinkable and with any luck we’ll see him suit up for India some day. As an Australian, the idea terrifies me.
