The NBA regular season will begin in a few days, but that doesn’t mean the drama is just starting. In fact, it’s almost in midseason form thanks to Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant.

Cupcake wars!
By now you know that Kevin Durant joined the Splash Brothers and the Golden State Warriors. And ever since, Russell Westbrook has been fairly quiet about it. When fans were waiting on a shocked retort from Russ, all we got was a Fourth of July photo. And while cupcakes are delicious, they don’t necessarily fulfill our craving for the next great basketball beef.
But it turns out that cupcakes were exactly what we were looking for. It just took the right perspective and an interview from Sports Illustrated to show us the light.
When Kendrick Perkins played center for the Thunder, he called teammates “cupcake” if he thought they were acting a little soft. Westbrook and Durant adopted the term in jest. Westbrook posted a bittersweet pic on Instagram: three plates of cupcakes topped by red and blue stars and sprinkles.
Now that the cupcake secret is out in the open, some other Thunder players are joining in on the cupcake fun. Enes Kanter, for example, is tweeting pictures of cupcakes.
From now on, we need all basketball beefs to include literal beef, or some other food. I can’t wait for Boris Diaw to start a new basketball feud with wine glasses or cups of coffee.
