His hockey team’s uniforms are blue and white (and black) with a lightning bolt emblazoned across their chests. He’s the guy in the net. And he wears the No. 30.
This high school hockey goaltender saved 98 shots in 1 game, and his team still lost
Oh my.
Nope, that’s not the Tampa Bay Lightning’s Ben Bishop, but he might as well be.
A Minnesota high school senior, Tony Bruns, is making waves for his performance during a Thanksgiving weekend game: a likely national record 98-save day.
98 saves!
The only time I’ve have that many saves is when I’m neurotically hitting command-S on my Mac because the lights are flickering in my apartment and the power might go out.
But Bruns’ incredible feat wasn’t enough, as Morris/Benson fell to Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato, 12-0.
Just look at this box score:
That’s good for an .891 save percentage from a goaltender whose team was outshot 110-6 and who’s used to making “40, 50, 60 and even 70-plus stops in a single game,” according to The Star-Tribune.
But to be fair, Morris/Benson has been struggling to dress a team in the past couple of seasons.
Only 11 skaters, three of whom are brand new to hockey, suited up against Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato. And they haven’t had a backup netminder for years, meaning Bruns never gets a day off.
“I kept calling for a shift change,” Bruns joked, via The Star-Tribune, on Tuesday. “But they didn’t listen.”
He wasn’t drafted last year, but after this performance, hopefully he’ll get a look.
