For his 40-yard dash, Canady wore cleats that paid homage to Ashley Guindon, an officer working her first shift with the Prince William County, Va., Police Department on Saturday when she responded to a call over a domestic disagreement. The suspect, who is in custody, reportedly shot and killed Guindon and wounded two other officers. Guindon was 28.
“Officer Guindon 2/27/16 Never Forget,” read the inscription on the heels of Canady’s Under Armour cleats.
The shooting hit close to home as Canady’s cousin, Alexus, is an officer in the Prince George’s County Police Department in Maryland.
Canady is giving one cleat to Guindon’s family and auctioning the other for a memorial fund in Guindon’s name.
