High school basketball team throws away state title after celebrating too early
Welp.
With four seconds left in the Rhode Island state championship game, a Burrillville High School boys basketball player intercepted an inbound pass — and fans erupted in glee. Ecstatic, he threw away the ball and ran to celebrate with his team.
The catch? There was still time left on the clock.
After resetting and calling timeout, Chariho took one more shot — and the game and the title from Burrillville. Yikes.
If it’s any consolation, Burrillville’s not the first team to throw away the ball prematurely.
