One stalled pace motorcyle caused a horrific cycling pileup

James Dator

Initially it seemed like everyone was going to be OK when a pace motorcyle stalled during the Red Hook Criterium in Brooklyn on Saturday night, but then things escalated quickly. After a single cyclist collided with the bike, a domino effect caused dozens of competitors to pile up.

It’s unclear how many people were injured in the wreck, but reports from the scene say that as many as five ambulances were required to ferry away injured cyclists, while many more received treatment at the scene.

The race is regarded as one of the most dangerous in cycling due to its high speeds. It is not sanctioned by cycling’s governing body in the USA, according to Gothamist.
