The vocal, often-screeching announcer has become a cult icon during the tournament by embracing the emotion of everything around him. On Monday that meant losing it when Iceland beat England, and slamming Britain for leaving the EU.
“It’s done! It’s done! We are never going home! Live the way you want England. Iceland is going to play France on Sunday! France Iceland! You can go home! You can get out of Europe! You can go wherever the hell you want! England 1, Iceland 2 is the closing score in Nice!”
Benediktsson’s gusto is the stuff of legend. If you haven’t heard his call of Iceland’s second goal then you really need to.
