THE WARRIORS BLEW A 3-1 LEAD IN THE 2016 NBA FINALS. Now that that’s out the way, an NBA podcaster for OnTheNBAbeat.com named Loren Lee Chen has been killing it on Jeopardy! the last couple days. He had a runaway lead going into Final Jeopardy on Tuesday and decided to have some fun with his wager.
This ‘Jeopardy’ champion keeps sneaking Warriors mockery into his wagers
The Warriors blowing a 3-1 lead will never not be funny.
Chen wagered $301, not enough to change the outcome of the game. Chen had the game in the bag. He had more than double the score of his closest competitor. But still ... $301 is an oddly specific wager. While he was watching the episode air from home, he gave viewers a hint about what his motivation was.
“I did want to make a ‘3-1’ reference somehow if ever I had a chance to make a meaningless bet, just to give a little nod to the basketball Internet, who have given me so much support for the last 10 years,” Chen told SB Nation. “During the bit of time we have before taping, I tried to brainstorm the best ways to do so [$301, $31, $321 (Three to one)], and decided that $301 was, to me, the best way to keep it subtle, but for people to catch it if they know what they’re looking for. “
After winning handily Tuesday, he was back again Wednesday. Coming down the stretch with another comfortable lead, he gave one more nod to the Dubs. His Final Jeopardy wager on Day 2: $739.
“One thing people might not realize is that a full week’s show is taped back-to-back,” Chen said, “so after I won on Tuesday, I had about 10 minutes to get changed, re-adjusted, and think of another wager, which I think maybe is why $739 was a bit more obvious.”
On whether there are any more joke bets in store: “I really mean it when I say I didn’t expect to make it this far,” Chen said. “We play a couple short practice games just to get used to the system and the set beforehand with the other contestants, and in each of those I was getting crushed. ... Also, I would only make these joke wagers if nothing’s on the line, obviously, which thankfully was the case for my first two games. I won’t say if that continues to be the case, guess you’ll just have to watch!”
