Shalane Flanagan becomes the first American woman to win the NYC Marathon in 40 years

This is awesome.

The New York City Marathon took place on Sunday morning, and it was one for the record books. Shalane Flanagan became the first American woman to win the marathon in 40 years.

The last American woman to win the marathon was Miki Gorman in 1977, according to The New York Times. Not only is this a historic win, it’s actually Flanagan’s first career world marathon major title, too.

She finished with an unofficial time of 2 hours 26 minutes 53 seconds — which is pretty dang fast.

Other American women in track and field congratulated Flanagan on her victory:

It must be an amazing feeling to win the NYC Marathon — and you can tell Flanagan realizes that, just by the look on her face.

Congrats!
