The following press release was sent to SB Nation by the American Cupcake Advisory Council.
Kevin Durant being called a ‘cupcake’ is drawing reactions from cupcakes everywhere

***** FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE *****
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - On Saturday, Nov. 11 it was brought to the attention of the ACAC that once again the term “cupcake” has been used in a negative fashion to mock athlete Kevin Durant of the Golden State Warriors.
It remains the position of the ACAC that the use of the term “cupcake” is harmful and spiteful, while failing to recognize the contributions of both cupcakes and athletes to the rich American tapestry.
What began as a phrase in college sports to connote a “soft” opponent has now been co-opted into the denigration of athletes in the professional sports sphere. This is unacceptable. The ACAC is deeply upset to have witnessed one of its own cross lines in Oklahoma City to mock Durant, and help perpetuate the falsehood that cupcakes are a lesser baked goods.
The ACAC official list of members does NOT show a “CupcakeKD” on the roster, leading us to believe this is actually a human in a cupcake suit — which is obviously reprehensible.
The ACAC would like to remind its members, and the world, that being a cupcake is a proud calling: a cake that stands on its own, can be consumed without a fork, and prevents any arguments over who gets an edge piece.
As outlined in our 1990 manifesto A Cupcake’s Demand, it’s the position of the ACAC that the following desserts are far softer and more apt for mocking than the cupcake:
- Flan.
- Creme Brulee.
- Zabaione.
- Jello.
- Angel Food Cake.
- Trifle.
- The Australian Pavlova.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Warriors for supporting the ACAC last night by showing some of the world’s most accomplished athletes wearing shirts that stood in solidarity with our cause.
A world without cupcakes would be a grim one indeed. It would ruin birthdays, weddings and the common picnic. When an athlete is called a “cupcake” it hurts actual cupcakes, who are just trying to achieve their dreams. We again must call for the end of this hateful comparison.
A. Cupcake, president American Cupcake Advisory Council.
